American Gangster

2007 · 157 min · R

Frank Lucas starts his career as the right-hand man of Harlem mob boss Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson but takes control after Johnson's death, establishing a lucrative heroin trade by smuggling it into the US on returning Vietnam War servicemen. Selling his product as "Blue Magic", Frank's heroin gains immense popularity due to its affordability and purity, quickly making him Harlem's top crime lord. Meanwhile, Detective Richie Roberts, who had previously been ostracized for his honesty, leads a task force targeting major drug suppliers, including Frank. As the two men clash, Frank expands his empire through various means, including bribing officials and forming alliances with celebrities, while evading capture until Roberts discovers his true identity during a high-profile boxing match. Ultimately, Frank is brought down after his cousin is caught shooting an innocent woman and wearing a wire to incriminate him, leading to a massive investigation and his eventual conviction.
