Dan Evans, a poor Civil War veteran, is forced to take on a perilous task to save his ranch from financial ruin. His debt to a local banker, Glen Hollander, is compounded when Hollander's men torch his barn and scatter his cattle. Evans encounters notorious outlaw Ben Wade and his gang while searching for his stolen horses, but Wade spares them, agreeing to return the horses after a brief confrontation. As Evans tries to secure his debt, he forms an unlikely alliance with Wade to ensure the outlaw's capture, promising to transport him to Yuma Territorial Prison on the fateful 3:10 train. Their journey becomes a cat-and-mouse game as Wade's gang pursues them, leading to a series of intense confrontations that ultimately test Evans' resolve and Wade's loyalty.
