Cassius Clay Jr., a brash and confident young boxer, makes his championship debut against Sonny Liston in 1964, dominating the early rounds before Liston applies a mysterious substance to his gloves, gaining an advantage. Clay recovers and wins the fight, adopting the name Muhammad Ali and embracing his newfound identity as a Muslim. As he rises to fame, Ali becomes embroiled in controversy, including a tumultuous marriage to Sonji Roi and his refusal to serve in the Vietnam War, which leads to his stripping of his boxing license and passport. After being convicted and serving time in prison, Ali returns to boxing, eventually facing off against rival Joe Frazier and George Foreman, including a memorable "Rumble in the Jungle" bout in Zaire where he uses his unorthodox tactics to knock out the exhausted Foreman and regain the heavyweight championship.
