2013 · 119 min · PG-13

In feudal Japan, a teenage outcast named Kai adopts Lord Asano, the benevolent ruler of the Akō Domain, after being found in the woods. Kai falls in love with Asano's daughter Mika, but their relationship is complicated by the disdain of Asano's samurai for Kai's mixed ancestry. Lord Kira, the Shōgun's master of ceremonies, seeks to take control of Akō with the help of a shapeshifting kitsune, using magic and deception to manipulate those around him. When Kira arranges a duel between Asano's chosen combatant and a golem, Kai intervenes, but is brutally punished by the Shōgun. Believing Kira has betrayed Mika, Asano attacks him, leading to his honorable death. The Shōgun brands Oishi and his men rōnin, forcing them to flee and vengeful Oishi eventually reunites the scattered group, including Kai, to exact revenge on Kira.
