200 Cigarettes

1999 · 101 min · R

New York City on the eve of 1981 is home to a diverse group of young adults navigating love, loneliness, and self-discovery. Among them are Monica, who throws a party in hopes of finding companionship, and her cousins Val and Stephie, who get lost in the city's seedy Alphabet City and stumble upon a punk club where they meet two men with a mysterious package. Meanwhile, Cindy and Jack share a awkward dinner date, while Lucy and her friend Kevin grapple with their growing feelings for each other. Other partygoers include Bridget and Caitlyn, competitive friends trying to escape their relationship issues, and a dim-witted bartender with a flair for flirting. As the night wears on, the group converges on Monica's apartment, where a wild and unpredictable party ensues, complete with unexpected romance and a memorable performance by Elvis Costello. The next morning, Monica awakens to discover that her party was a huge success, despite her own forgetfulness of the events.
