In a desolate post-apocalyptic future, a deadly virus has ravaged the earth, leaving only a few scattered communities alive. Thirty-eight years after this catastrophe, a prisoner named James Cole is selected for a mission to travel back in time to 1996 in an attempt to gather information about the original strain of the virus, which could potentially lead to a cure. However, upon arriving in 1990, Cole's journey is derailed when he is arrested and committed to a psychiatric hospital, where he meets a psychiatrist named Dr. Kathryn Railly and encounters a fellow inmate named Jeffrey Goines, whose family may hold crucial knowledge about the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, the group believed responsible for unleashing the virus. As Cole navigates this new reality, his perception of time becomes increasingly distorted, leading to multiple journeys between past and future, and ultimately culminating in a tragic confrontation that changes the course of history.
