As a young boy, Howard Hughes learns to spell "quarantine" after receiving a bath from his mother, foreshadowing the obsessive-compulsive disorder that will plague him throughout his life. Hughes goes on to become a pioneering aviator, setting multiple records and flying solo around the world in four days. His success is matched only by his instability, as he struggles with OCD and becomes increasingly paranoid, eventually retreating into an isolated "germ-free zone". Despite his personal turmoil, Hughes remains driven, producing films like Hell's Angels and becoming a successful film producer and aviation magnate. His relationships with women, including actresses Katharine Hepburn and Ava Gardner, are marked by intense passion and possessiveness, highlighting the complexities of his personality. Ultimately, Hughes's determination to complete his ambitious projects, such as the H-4 flying boat, leads to a dramatic confrontation with those who seek to bring him down.
