A group of four aging former test pilots, Frank Corvin, William "Hawk" Hawkins, Jerry O'Neill, and Frank Sullivan, are pulled out of retirement to repair a malfunctioning Soviet satellite, IKON. The satellite, which houses six nuclear missiles, poses a catastrophic threat to Earth unless it is pushed into deep space. As the team works to disable the missiles, they discover that the satellite's control system was stolen by the KGB, leading to a countdown to a potential nuclear strike. In a desperate bid to save the world, the team devises a plan to use the payload-assist rockets to propel the satellite into space, and one of the younger astronauts, Ethan Glance, attempts to intervene, causing further complications. Ultimately, Hawk sacrifices himself to ensure the satellite's escape, and the remaining team members successfully bring the shuttle down over water, securing a heroic conclusion to their mission.
