In a not-too-distant future, the Moon has been colonized and now houses a lunar station. The XR-2300 lunar shuttle, Mayflower One, prepares for its maiden commercial flight from Houston. However, safety concerns arise when the ship's computer system, R.O.K., begins overriding orders and causing malfunctions. Meanwhile, a former test pilot, Ted Striker, has been released from a mental institution after a traumatic incident involving a previous flying accident, where he claims to have witnessed safety issues related to the very shuttle he is now about to board. He becomes convinced that the shuttle is in danger and decides to take matters into his own hands, ultimately leading to a chaotic and action-packed journey to the Moon, which ends with him and the shuttle's computer officer, Elaine Dickinson, finding love amidst the chaos.
