The Wizard

1989

Three children, including nine-year-old Jimmy Woods, embark on a journey to compete in a prestigious video game tournament in California, seeking refuge from their troubled past. Following his twin sister's tragic death, Jimmy struggles to cope with his emotions, leading his family to consider committing him to an institution. With the help of his brother Corey and new friend Haley, Jimmy discovers his hidden talent for video games and sets out on a cross-country road trip to participate in the "Video Armageddon" tournament at Universal Studios Hollywood. Along the way, they face challenges and obstacles, ultimately reaching the tournament's final round where Jimmy faces off against other skilled gamers, including a newcomer named Mora Grissom, in a heated competition of Super Mario Bros. 3, a game that would become a massive hit upon its official release in the United States.
