In medieval times, a poet named Ahmad ibn Fahdlan is exiled from Baghdad as an "ambassador" to the Volga Bulgars, where he takes refuge with a group of Norsemen, including Melchisidek and Herger. Initially, he learns about their culture and way of life, communicating with them through Melchisidek's Latin-speaking skills and eventually earning their respect through his knowledge and linguistic abilities. Ahmad becomes embroiled in their struggle against a legendary evil known as the "Wendol," who are described as human cannibals clad in bear-like clothing and thought to possess supernatural powers. Alongside the Norsemen, particularly Buliwyf, he embarks on a perilous journey to defeat the Wendol warlord, while also facing personal challenges and transformations. Through his experiences, Ahmad grows from an outsider to a valuable member of the group, ultimately witnessing Buliwyf's heroic sacrifice and reflecting on the lessons he learned during his time among the Vikings.
