He studied English at the University of Sussex, becoming involved in student drama productions that led to connections with notable figures such as Michael Attenborough and Jim Carter. After initially considering an academic career, Woodeson opted for a path in the arts, winning a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and going on to perform in various regional theatres across the UK and US, including the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Manhattan Theatre Club. His early work included seasons at the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool, and the Lyceum Theatre, Crewe, alongside notable actors like Jonathan Pryce and Julie Walters.
