Director
Michael Cimino
Cimino began his career as a commercial director in New York before moving to Los Angeles in the early 1970s to pursue screenwriting. He co-wrote the scripts for Silent Running and Magnum Force, and then wrote the preliminary script for Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, which became his directorial debut and one of the highest-grossing films of that year. This success led to him achieving widespread acclaim with The Deer Hunter, which won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. His creative control of Heaven's Gate resulted in the film becoming a critical and commercial failure, but it has since been reevaluated as one of the greatest American films of all time. Cimino went on to make only a handful of films, leaving numerous projects unfinished due to his uncompromising artistic vision.
