As the end of World War II approaches, the importance of baseball in the United States becomes clear, particularly in the segregated Negro leagues, where African American players face obstacles in competing against white teams. Branch Rickey, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, seeks to break the color barrier and recruits Jackie Robinson, a talented player from the Negro leagues' Kansas City Monarchs, after being approached by a Dodgers scout at a gas station. With Rickey's guidance, Robinson joins the Dodgers under strict conditions and must navigate a series of challenging situations, including confrontations with racists, both on and off the field. Despite facing hostility and adversity, Robinson perseveres, earning the respect of his teammates and the admiration of fans, ultimately leading the Dodgers to the 1947 World Series championship.
