Knight Jr. began his acting career by studying drama at Yale University before transitioning to film. He made his screen debut in the 1970s, initially landing small roles in films such as The Last Detail and The China Syndrome. His breakthrough came when he played the role of Richard Thornburg in John McTiernan's action film Die Hard, released in 1988, followed by its sequel in 1990. He also voiced Walter Peck in the supernatural comedy Ghostbusters.
