Roald Dahl

Born in Wales to Norwegian immigrant parents, Dahl grew up living in England and went on to serve in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War, becoming a fighter pilot and intelligence officer before rising to the rank of acting wing commander. This experience likely influenced his writing career, which began to gain prominence in the 1940s with works for both children and adults. Dahl's writing style, characterized by unexpected endings and a mix of dark humor and warmth, would eventually establish him as one of the world's best-selling authors, with notable works including James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Throughout his career, Dahl received numerous literary awards, including the 1983 World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement and the 1990 British Book Awards' Children's Author of the Year.
