Patrick O'Brian
Richard Patrick Russ was born on 12 December 1914 and later adopted the pen name Patrick O'Brian. As a novelist and translator, his breakthrough came with the Aubrey-Maturin series, a 20-novel collection set in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, focusing on the friendship between naval captain Jack Aubrey and physician Stephen Maturin. The series is notable for its meticulous research into early 19th-century life and authentic language. In addition to the Aubrey-Maturin series, O'Brian wrote several standalone novels and short stories, as well as translating works from French to English and writing biographies of prominent figures such as Joseph Banks and Picasso.
