Michael Jai White began his career as a martial artist, starting training at the age of seven and eventually earning seven legitimate black belts in various styles. As a teenager, he moved to Connecticut, graduating from high school in 1988. White's breakthrough performance came in the 1995 HBO film Tyson, followed by his portrayal of Al Simmons in the 1997 film Spawn, which marked him as the first African-American to play a major comic book superhero in a major motion picture.
