His parents owned a printing business that struggled, prompting him to start working at a local confectionery store at the age of 10. Later, at 14, he began selling timber in Shizuoka prefecture before returning to Tokyo to study pharmacy. Throughout his career, Fujiwara collaborated extensively with renowned director Akira Kurosawa, showcasing his versatility in both comedic and dramatic roles.
