Berry began her career as a model, participating in beauty contests like Miss Ohio in 1986 and finishing as the first runner-up in the Miss USA pageant that same year. Her breakthrough came with the romantic comedy Boomerang, which led to roles in The Flintstones and Bulworth. She gained recognition for her performance in the television film Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, earning a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. This marked the beginning of a successful career in Hollywood, with notable performances in films like Monster's Ball, where she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and the X-Men film series.
