David Lean

David Lean began his career as a film editor in the early 1930s before making his directorial debut with the 1942 film In Which We Serve, a collaboration with playwright Noël Coward. Lean went on to direct several notable films, including the Hollywood adaptations of Charles Dickens novels Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, as well as the critically acclaimed epic The Bridge on the River Kwai. His subsequent films, including Lawrence of Arabia and Ryan's Daughter, showcased his mastery of large-scale storytelling, while a decade-long hiatus following Ryan's Daughter allowed him to reassess his craft. Lean experienced a career revival with the 1984 adaptation of E. M. Forster's novel A Passage to India, earning widespread critical acclaim and cementing his reputation as a master filmmaker.
