Roberts began his career as a writer, entering New York University at 16 and graduating three years later. He started working in theater, collaborating with Ivan Goff on the 1941 theatrical suspense thriller Portrait in Black, before transitioning into film in the early 1940s. Roberts spent six years on stage, then settled in Hollywood permanently in 1949, where he continued to collaborate with Goff on various projects. The duo received an Academy Award nomination for their scriptwork on Man of a Thousand Faces, which was released in 1957.
