In a small New York City restaurant, a strict routine is disrupted when Carol Connelly, a single mother with an acutely asthmatic son, transfers to a new job closer to her family in Brooklyn. Her new coworker, Melvin Udall, a bestselling romance novelist with obsessive-compulsive disorder, is forced to tolerate her presence despite his initial dislike for her. When Carol's new job ends, Melvin offers to help her care for her son's medical expenses if she returns to the restaurant, but she rejects his offer, unaware of the depth of his feelings. As Melvin's routine begins to unravel, he forms an unlikely bond with Carol and later, with Simon Bishop, a gay artist who has recently recovered from a violent robbery at his apartment. Through a series of unexpected events, including a road trip to Baltimore and a chance encounter at a bakery, Melvin learns to confront his insecurities and opens himself up to the possibility of love and connection.
